Despite the global crisis generated by the coronavirus pandemic, Brazil has registered a 57% growth in the number of trademark registrations made before its national Patent and Trademark Office (INPI). Last year only, the number of filings was of 386.845; in 2020, that number was of 126.000.

The only way one can guarantee property of a trademark in the Brazilian market is by registering it before the INPI, which grants the TM owner exclusivity over its use in the national territory, in its segment of activity, as well as the possibility of expanding their business by licensing or franchising the trademark rights in exchange – most of the time – for royalty payments.

The benefits of obtaining trademark registration in Brazil are many and the mandatory aspect of such registration only reflects and highlights its importance for one to successfully operate in commerce in our country.
